What is a Rainwater tank?

Rain Cycle tanks can make an important contribution towards reducing the demand for mains water. The Rain Cycle systems are an efficient and economical way to meet the new requirements set down by governing bodies. However certain requirements are necessary to maintain your Rain Cycle and protect reticulated potable water supply.

Rain Cycle in line with NSW Health and local Councils recommendations does not recommend the use of rainwater tanks for drinking purposes where a reticulated drinking water supply is available.

The system offered utilizes a below ground rainwater tank, a high pressure submersible pump (no noise) a childproof ground level inspection lid and a slimline wall mounted control panel. Rainwater can provide an alternate source for the following:

• Toilet flushing
• Residential garden irrigation
• Washing cars
• Filling ornamental ponds
• Washing machine (with suitable filter)
• Topping up swimming pools

How Does It work

Rainwater is collected via the roof, gutters and down pipes, through a ground level ‘easy to clean’ filter bag and into an in ground concrete or above ground plastic rainwater tank.

During periods of excessive rain the overflow is designed to draw water from the base of the tank, thus creating a self cleaning function whilst discharging oversupply into the stormwater system or via an on site detention facility. Noting that in some instances this rainwater harvesting system may be used for on site detention.

When installed this rainwater supply can be connected to one or more outside taps, one or more toilets and if connected to the cold on the washing machine and/or the hot water service, we suggest that additional filters be used to remove fine sediment and discolouration.

A slimline wall mounted control panel controls flow and continuity of water supply during extended dry periods by either:

Automatically switching between rainwater and mains water supply.

Automatically topping up tank from 10% to 20% from mainswater supply.

Noting that the top up rate is restricted to comply with Sydney Water guidelines and if supplied via a visible air gap, may eliminate the need for further backflow prevention devices.

There is no noise and each system functions automatically.

What is BASIX?

Introduced by the NSW Government, BASIX, the Building Sustainability Index, ensures homes are designed to use less potable water and be responsible for fewer greenhouse gas emissions by setting energy and water reduction targets for house and units. BASIX is one of the most robust sustainable planning measures in Australia, delivering equitable and effective water and greenhouse gas reductions across NSW.   How does BASIX work? BASIX is an online program that is free and accessible to anyone. The user (usually the building designer) enters data relating to the house or unit design – such as location, size, building materials etc. – into the BASIX tool. BASIX analyses this data and determines how it scores against the Energy and Water targets. The design must pass specific targets (which vary according to location and building type) before the user can print the BASIX Certificate.   The BASIX Certificate This lists all the commitments the user has agreed to, and the Certifying Authority will check these at various stages of construction. The BASIX Certificate must be attached to the development application before it can be processed.   Providing options BASIX is free, flexible and easy to use, allowing users to determine how they will meet targets from a wide range of options such as rainwater tanks, water-saving fixtures, improved insulation, passive solar orientation, natural lighting and native plants for gardens.
