What is AWTS?

These sewage and grey water flow directly to the AWTS tank, which we usually install underground, so the only parts visible are the lid and the control panel.

How Does AWTS Work?

AWTS has a series of treatment chambers integrated with an irrigation system. Wastewater from a household or commercial establishment is treated in several steps in various chambers or sections of the tank that process the liquid waste in various ways.

1. The first section is like that of a regular concrete septic tank. The liquid waste flows into the first chamber where solid substances settle to the bottom leaving the liquid at the top. The solids form a sludge layer there at the bottom of the tank.

2. Scum or a layer of dirt or froth collects at the top, and the wastewater that has been partially clarified flows into the second chamber. Here, the water is mixed with air to help bacteria in treating it further. This is called the aeration process. The aerobic bacteria (requires oxygen to live) degrades the solids further and lessens the number of harmful bugs within the partially cleared water. This is made possible by pumping air directly into the effluent.
3. A third chamber is for additional clarification, as the solids are returned to either the septic chamber or the aeration chamber for further treatment before irrigation can happen.

Note:  Bacteria in the first chamber breaks down the solid substances in the scum and sludge layer. If there are solids that cannot be completely broken down, they build up in the chamber and must be subjected to a periodical pump out.

In the second chamber, air is added to the wastewater to promote microbial growth and allow aerobic degradation of the pollutants.  Aeration is a fundamental part of the biological water treatment system in which microorganisms are used to break down the contaminants.  In industrial and commercial wastewater treatments, aeration is what is referred to as the secondary treatment.

As in other household systems, all septic plants require periodic wastewater treatment maintenance. The service includes regular checks on all the elements of the system and pumping out of the tank every few years. AWTS are more complex than a concrete septic tank. It is a requirement by the Health Department and local councils that all components of the treatment plant be inspected on a quarterly basis to maintain its integrity. This means that the homeowner or business manager will have to schedule an appointment with the service team at ECO-SEPTIC for servicing every three months. 

ECO-SEPTIC will arrange a date and time of the service  when you book your maintenance call. If problems with your AWTS are encountered before the scheduled date, don’t worry, we have available technicians on hand to help fix the problem and provide advice.
