Gas cylinder storage cages are designed to safely store cylinder gas bottles upright by individually restraining them inside a lockable secured cage. Gas cylinders can be extremely dangerous and have strict storage requirements issued by the Australian Government under section AS4332-2004 set by the committee on Safe Handling Of Chemicals.
A typical gas cylinder is filled with a design pressure ranging from 2,200 - 2,600 psi and contains approximately 8.5m3 of atmospheric pressure. This is around 160x the internal volume of the cylinder. Compressed gas presents a tremendous amount of stored energy and if the outlet valve is damaged or broken off, the sudden release of gas can turn the cylinder into a projectile that may cause serious or lethal injuries. Alternatively, many gases housed in compressed cylinders are flammable, corrosive, toxic and explosive so even a small leak from falling over or being impacted by another object while improperly stored can be a serious risk to workers.
Due to the volatile nature of some gasses, gas cylinders should not be transported frequently as movement can cause the contents to decompose over time which can result in a dangerous reaction. Gas cylinder storage cages provide workplaces with a safe permanent location to store gas cylinders while not in use. Moreover, storage cages are designed with enhanced fire resistance to contain a fire from spreading.
