• Semi-electric straddle stacker. Designed for ease of movement in narrow aisles and small space warehouses, the semi-auto stacker has both hydraulic and electric controls and can lift up to 2,000 kilograms.
• Semi-electric straddle leg stacker. The big difference with this unit is that the straddle leg stacker can lower its forks right to the ground for easier pallet access and can lift up to 1,000 kilograms.
• Electric straddle stackers. Suitable for light to medium warehouse use with a capacity of 2,000 kilograms for some models, electric pallet stackers can generally lift to between 1.6 and 3.3 metres with full electric operation. 
• Electric straddle leg stacker. Like its semi-electric equivalent, this straddle leg stacker can also lower its forks to the ground with a 1,000 kilogram capacity and fully electric operation.

Part of the reason why electric straddle stackers are so compact and maneuverable in small spaces is that they don’t have a seat for a driver. The driver walks right behind the stacker pushing it along like a pallet jack. The driver then raises and lowers the forks using hydraulic or electric controls and stacks the pallet where required. 

• What weights do you need to lift? Lifting capabilities vary from around 1,000 to 2,000 kilograms.
• What height do you need to lift pallets to? Again, different models offer higher capabilities up to about 3.5 metres, so work out your height requirements.
• How cramped is the workspace? Narrow aisles? Clutter? Tiny turn spaces? Overhead obstructions such as lights and crossbeams? Interrogate your workspace to avoid complications later.
• Open or closed pallets? Make sure the pallet stacker and pallet type will work together. 
• How many lifts per day? The more lifts per day, the more a stacker should do the bulk of the work.
• Semi-electric or electric? With fully powered operation, electric stackers are the best choice for medium to heavy use as they are easy to maneuver in tight spaces and workers can operate them with minimal effort and injury risk. They are, however, the most expensive.

Prices of stackers vary considerably, particularly between manual, semi-electric and fully electric models. However, as a guide, electric straddle stackers cost between $3,000 and $6,000 with an average price of around $4,000.

• Forks won’t go to their full height. This is probably due to a lack of hydraulic oil.
• Forks won’t raise or lower. This can be caused by dirty hydraulic oil or a malfunction of the cylinder piston rod.

Indeed, they do. The best time to charge an electric stacker is overnight so it’s ready for each new business day. Obviously, there needs to be someone designated to ensure overnight charging occurs or you’ll be starting the day with a very flat, unusable machine.

Any machine tasked with lifting and moving heavy loads needs to be kept in top condition to minimise operator risks. Here are some important regular maintenance tips. 

• Check the hydraulic oil every 3 months
• Change the hydraulic oil once a year
• Lubricate axles, grease fittings and lube points on wheels once a month
• Wash stacker wheels once a week to avoid debris causing unnecessary wear
• Check stacker chain positions once a week
