To celebrate the new site we've taken a look at the history of mobile phones – it's remarkable to see how far the humble mobile has come!

The advancement of technology has come in leaps and bounds in the past century. From the advent of phones in the home and Morse code to the creation of the internet and the smartphone, the rapid rise of technology has revolutionised the world.

The mobile phone has been a major part of our recent history, covering the last four decades and making up much of our lives. In fact, many people have never experienced life without a mobile phone! First created in 1973, the mobile phone has seen a lot of changes from the bulky piece it was to the slimline
multi-tool it now is.

The first public wireless phone call was made by Martin Cooper of Motorola in April of 1973. Heading into the 1980s saw the mobile expand significantly, with the first cell phone sold to the public in this decade – the Motorola Dynatac 8000X – at almost $4000 USD! This "brick" as many people now like to call it, had a
long rubber antenna, large buttons and just half an hour charge before needing to be plugged in. The same decade saw the creation of the flip phone.

The 90s is where mobile phones started to look a little like what we are used to today. In 1993, the first smartphone was created. The IBM Simon Personal Communicator, at just under $1000 USD, included a pager, access to email, a stylus, faxing capabilities, a QWERTY keypad and a calendar. Then the famous Nokia arrived and with it games like Snake and the ability to customise your phone.

The naughties saw phones taken to another level again. The first phones with cameras were released in 2002 with a very basic system compared to today's iPhones and Samsungs. This year also saw the popular integrated BlackBerry phone that offered email, text and internet. In 2004 the first ultra-thin phone from Motorola was launched, soon after this the iPhone came into existence with Android on its coattails. Today's smartphones are so much a part of our lives that we rarely leave home without them!

With phones being such an integral part of our lives, here at Signet we have worked towards creating a more user-friendly experience online, with our site now suitable for all devices – including your smartphone!
