1 Introduction
During the production of lithium-ion batteries, a high amount of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone or N-methyl-pyrrolidone (short NMP) is used. NMP is used as a solvent for nickel, manganese and cobalt powders for electrode plate coating. Given its high cost as a raw material, NMP is actively recycled, particularly in the field of battery production.
2 NMP recovery process
During the coating of electrodes in the lithium-ion battery production, NMP laden exhausts and waste form. These need to be treated afterwards to meet global as well as local emission standards. Figure 1 shows a scheme of a typical NMP recovery plant.
The recovery process drastically reduces investments in fresh NMP material during battery production on the one hand and minimises emissions on the other hand.
3 Anton Paar’s sensor solutions for inline NMP concentration measurement
Anton Paar’s precise and robust sound velocity sensor L-Sonic 5100 is already successfully implemented in fully automated NMP recovery units. This sensor performs exceptionally well, particularly in the high concentration range of 70-100 %, which is a common operating range for such systems.
To cover the complete concentration range from 0-100 %, the L-Com 5500 is used. This sensor combines a density and sound velocity measurement to cover the complete measurement range.
