There are two types of lift function mechanisms.
The first of which is the standard hydraulic cylinder which is operated by a foot pedal. This type of mechanism requires the operator to manually pump the foot pedal to raise the platform to the desired height and to lower the platform by depressing the pedal. Although this method is easy, it can be time consuming and repetitive when lifting and lowering goods frequently.
The alternative mechanism is the battery powered lift. These devices are hand controlled at the press of a button to control.
There is currently no requirement to hold a WP High Risk Work License to operate a scissor lift in Australia. It is important to note that professional training can be obtained by completing an external EWPA Yellow Card course.

Scissor lift trolleys are designed with either a single or double scissor mechanism. Double scissor mechanisms generally have a much higher maximum lift height compared to their single counterparts. Single scissors have an average height range of 500-700mm compared to double scissors 1000-1500mm.
Another advantage of the double scissor is the increased platform stability. However, the downside of the double scissor is the increased weight of the trolley. As a double scissor has more material it becomes heavier and more difficult for the operator to maneuver.
The price of a scissor lift trolley will vary dramatically depending on its intended use. Smaller everyday units with a single scissor mechanism and a hydraulic foot pedal range from $300 - $1,200. Larger industrial units that require much high weight capacities and lift heights will range from $1300 - $10000+.
Whether it is for transporting boxes of paper around the office to raising a car engine overhead, scissor lift trolleys have limitless applications. They are designed to minimise manual handling risks in the workplace by providing ergonomic controls and customisable work heights. They can also be used as secondary work spaces by offering a large stable platform.
A common problem for scissor lift trolleys that may occur is the lift does not reach the maximum height. This is generally due to the hydraulic oil level being too low or the limit switch being incorrectly set. To fix this, check the oil level. If it is low, it is possible a leak has occurred. If this is the case simply fix the leak and top up the hydraulic oil. If not, check the limit switch.
Most units have electromechanical switches that detect the highest and lowest lifting positions. It is possible for the limit switch to be set in the wrong position. To correct this, remove the limit switch and extend the platform to the desired end position, then reinstall it at that point.
