Things to consider when buying encoders:

  • Know your application details - Important factors to know before getting started are whether you need linear or rotary (shaft) motion encoding, incremental or absolute encoding, your required encoder speed and resolution according to your application.
  • Choose between incremental or absolute encoding - Incremental encoders transmit pulses relative to an amount of movement and require a known starting position and external pulse counting to maintain position information, which is lost when powering down the system. Absolute encoders constantly transmit actual position and maintain position information even after powering down the system.
  • Choose your encoder’s operating principle - Encoders with various operating principles are available, including optical, magnetic and hall effect sensing. These are directly related to and cover a wide range of application specific needs.
  • Calculate your encoder resolution - By defining your overall motion distance length (L, in distance units) required positioning resolution (res, in distance units), you can calculate your required encoder resolution for the total motion travelled (P, in total number of pulses) using the formula.
  • Consider specialized application requirements - Specialized requirements include encoders for ultra-high vacuum applications, extreme sub-micron accuracy and resolution for the semi-conductor industry, shielding from EMI or RFI signal interference and specialized materials of manufacture.
