Filtration is an additional step in the overall treatment plant that improves the quality of treated effluent achieved. Higher effluent quality may be required to meet regulatory requirements or for wastewater reuse.

Aerofloat designed and installed a number of filtration treatment processes at Visy’s new corrugated box processing and printing plant in New Zealand: including sand filtration, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis. As the Visy site was not connected to the sewer, the regulatory authorities required a high stringent water discharge standard. The heavily contaminated process wastewater was treated to a standard suitable for irrigation. The permeate was reused as boiler feed water and the RO reject in the starch makeup solution – creating a complete water recycle loop.

SAND FILTRATION
Depending on the level of treatment required, a sand filter is an excellent final stage or a pre-treatment step to MF, UF or RO. Sand filtration is a process used to typically reduce suspended solids in wastewater from 20mg/L to 5mg/L.
MICROFILTRATION
Microfiltration (MF) is a similar process to ultrafiltration but removes solids down to 0.1-10 microns. Depending on the quality of influent and the desired effluent standard, microfiltration may be installed as a stand-alone final treatment step or as a pre-treatment to RO.
ULTRAFILTRATION
Depending on the effluent quality required, an ultrafiltration (UF) unit may be installed as a pre-treatment step to reverse osmosis. UF can typically remove solids down to 0.005 microns. The UF process can remove low concentration colloidal solids in industrial or sewage effluent.
REVERSE OSMOSIS
The reverse osmosis (RO) process filters out dissolved salts from highly saline waters. The treated effluent from RO can be used for drinking water or industrial process water reuse. RO is typically the final stage of treatment and can remove some organisms (such as viruses), as well as the dissolved salts.
