Using Jet Fuel As A Cooling Media!

USING JETFUEL AS A COOLING MEDIA IN AN INDUSTRIAL HEAT EXCHANGER.

In 2016 Teralba industries was approached by Vopak Terminals to repair a leaking heat exchanger. Located in Botany adjacent to Sydney International Airport, the Vopak terminal processes most of the jet fuel used in jet aircraft.

The carbon steel Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger in question, cooled glycol which in turn cooled bearings in large fuel pumps and ancillary equipment. The glycol was cooled by utilizing the huge volumes stored jet fuel, as the cooling source.

A site inspection revealed that the aged Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger was close to the end of it’s service life and there was minimum downtime available to perform any remediation.

Teralba Industries designed and manufactured a replacement Dimpleflo Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger, to replicate the exact footprint and nozzle connections of the existing unit, using stainless steel dimpled heat transfer tubing. This substantially increased the heat transfer capacity of the heat exchanger as well as increasing the expected life span.
