Extending the life of underground mining equipment

LaserBond® have a range of processes for depositing an array of different materials to any surface, with material selection depending on the final application.

Not only can this method of component protection and reclamation be used to decrease maintenance costs and increase productivity, it can also remove the need for large CAPEX. We tailor our services to meet the requirements of individual applications and individual projects, constantly evaluating operational and maintenance solutions that are innovative, functional and cost-effective.

The customer in this case was having issues with seizing due to steel on steel contact between the inner and outer cutter drums. The customer approached us to devise a solution, and we developed a material partnership with a high hardness material on the outer diameter of the inner cutter drum, and a bronze material for the inner diameter of the outer cutter drum (gold coloured coating in the photos). Not only did this completely stop any future seizing issues, it helped to extend the useful life of the drums.

We complete work on gear cutter cases as well as gear boxes and other components that, while severely worn, may be considered too expensive to replace with new components.

In some cases, such as the base frames, we have successfully been able to extend useful life from 20,000 hours to over 40,000 hours. This has been a very significant improvement for the customer with considerable cost benefits too.

Because the repair of equipment is typically completed by major Original Equipment Manufacturers, some end users don’t realise less expensive reclamation options are available as alternative to replacement. For example, when an OEM states that a new yoke is required at a cost of over $250,000.00 because it is past its wear limit, our customers are now able

to instruct the OEM to have it repaired by LaserBond, because LaserBond has successfully repaired similar items in the past, will provide a guarantee, and it will save many thousands of dollars, and in some cases hundreds of thousands of dollars.

LaserBond currently has operations in New South Wales and South Australia, and can successfully service all states of Australia. LaserBond staff regularly visit mine sites to gain first hand information and provide details of the suitability of our service. If we cant repair it – no one can.
