DIX retrofits a new pair of hydraulic drives to the MV Murray Princess

Dix Engineering was recently responsible for the installation and design details for new hydraulic drive motors on the MV Murray Princess.

The work was performed as part of a two week annual overhaul performed at the dry dock in Renmark, SA.

DIX replaced the existing motors, manufactured and fitted new torque arms, drive links, keyways, hydraulic lines etc.The paddle wheel required various repairs and the stub axle shafts were replaced as  part of the drive upgrade. Initial river trials are showing strong performance!

Captain Cook Cruises expects increased efficiency and reliability from the new drives.

The hydraulic motors are rated to 42 MPa, but generally operate at 12 MPa. They are rated at 35kNm torque at 22 rpm, and were manufactured by Hagglands.

Other work performed:

Fix bow and aft thrusters. Hull inspection and repair. Build up and re-machine rudder shafts.  Repairs to fire and water mains. Repairs to hand-rails.

In previous years some of the other work we have completed includes replacing diesel generator-sets, and replaced hydraulic and water piping on the vessel.

The customer was very happy with DIX ability to efficiently plan and manage the repairs, to ensure the vessel was ready to "steam" over the coming January holiday season.
