Things to consider when buying a proximity sensor:

• Operating distance/sensing range - consider the nominal range/maximum operating distance and the reset distance.
• Standard detectable object - This tells the specified shape, size, and material which is used as the standard to check the performance of the Proximity Sensor. Detection distance of the  sensors may differ according to the shape and material of an object. 
• Device technology/type - Examples are: 
  • Capacitive - suitable for plastic targets
  • Inductive - Always require metallic targets
  • Hall effect - used for proximity switching, positioning, speed detection, and current sensing applications.
  • Photoelectric- Suitable for plastic targets and are largely used in industrial manufacturing. They are through-beam, retro-reflective, and diffused. 
  • Ultrasonic technologies - target translucence or reflectivity do not affect these types of sensors as opposed to photoelectric sensors.
• Electrical requirements - Consider AC/DC power input, voltage, current, frequency, resistance, switch type (normally open or normally closed), interface (series or parallel)
• Device housing material and shape - Standard casings include stainless steel, nickel-plated, crastin, rhyton and polyamide. Shapes are cylindrical, rectangular, ring or slot type.
